Welcome to Woodlawn Cemetery

Woodlawn Cemetery had its beginnings in 1871 when local business owners met to discuss plans for a new cemetery.  Land was purchased and in 1872 the first lot was sold to Christian and Frances Smith for the burial of their young son.  Now a local landmark, Woodlawn Cemetery continues it

Now a local landmark, Woodlawn Cemetery continues its long history of service to families.  Current generations may purchase final resting sites for loved ones among Woodlawn’s beautiful acres.

Woodlawn Cemetery is open to visitors every day from dawn to dusk.  Please respect the dignity of those buried here while enjoying the peaceful setting and scenery.

“Voices of the Past” Returns to Woodlawn Cemetery

History is coming back to life as the Woodlawn Cemetery Association prepares for this year’s “Voices of the Past” on October 7 and 8, 2017 (Columbus Day weekend).  The actors are cast and the months of research have led to seven “residents” of the historic Edwardsville cemetery presenting their fascinating life stories.

According to Madison County historian and genealogy researcher Mary Westerhold, “After having spent so much time reading about the characters’ lives and families, it’s exciting for me to see the actors in costume bringing them to life. Listening to them telling stories next to their graves really drives home the point that truly every stone in the cemetery has a story. Each life with their own rich tale of trials and accomplishments.”

This is the fourth year that Woodlawn has given the cemetery tours that feature some of Edwardsville’s prominent, and not so prominent, past citizens.  This year the theme centers on professions including a physician, a judge, a businessman/banker, a publisher, an attorney, and soldiers from both the Civil War and the War of 1812.

Guides will lead small groups through the beautiful shaded historic cemetery stopping to hear actor’s stories at seven different grave sites. Starting at 1:00 pm, on both Saturday and Sunday, the afternoon guided walking tours leave about every 10-15 minutes and take about an hour. The last tours are set to leave at 2:30 pm.

A special seated candlelight presentation will be held in Woodlawn’s hillside chapel on Saturday, evening October 7, at 7:00 p.m.  Note though, that seating in the chapel is very limited, so tickets are only available in advance and generally sell out quickly

Afternoon tour ticket prices are $13 each the day of the event.  Advance discounted tickets for the afternoon tours are available for $10. All evening presentation tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance only.

Advance tickets are available for purchase at: Edwardsville Public Library and at the Madison County Archival Library on Main Street next to the Historical Museum.

Proceeds support the maintenance, necessary repairs, and improvements to the historic cemetery.
